Unlike most modern stick built homes timber framed trusses are frequently exposed amplifying the feeling of space and volume inside.
Timber frame truss design.
In a scissor truss design heavy timber or otherwise the bottom chord members crisscross each other.
Each truss style can be modified heavily but these classifications will fit most timber trusses in the post and beam world.
Here are the five basic truss systems we incorporate in our designs.
The example shown above has a king post also which many scissor trusses will need for support.
The basis of timber truss design concepts.
This design is a winner for great rooms and entry ways as long as the span isn t too wide and the roof pitch isn t too shallow.
This design adds more vertical elements above the arched bottom chord with the extra volume below.
The arch chord with queen posts timber frame truss is another variation on the classic king post style this time with twin vertical queen posts.
The radius cut for the arch should be shallow in order to be cut out of solid sawn timber.
Usage of timber frame trusses is highly dependent on the houses or structures square footage roof lines both pitch and context of other rooflines overall spans design preferences and structural requirements.
The timber frame ceiling can be at the roofline rather than tied to the base of the truss s lower beam and individual rooms can have varying ceiling heights thanks to that flexibility.
